The two sons of deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak are to be tried on suspicion of insider trading, Egypt’s prosecutor general says.

Gamal and Alaa Mubarak are already on trial alongside their father for abuse of power. A verdict is due on Saturday.

The new charges relating to alleged stock market manipulation will see the pair tried alongside seven others.

They were accused of violating rules to gain unlawful profits from shares in Al Watany Bank, the prosecutor said.

According to Egypt’s deputy justice minister, the brothers have $340m (£215m) in Swiss bank accounts.

Officials allege that most of the funds, which have been frozen, are held by Alaa, with the balance reportedly held by his younger brother Gamal.

In a statement, the prosecutor general said Alaa, Gamal and seven others had been referred to the criminal court on charges of violating stock market and central bank rules.

Of the seven others, two are board members and joint chief executives of Egyptian investment bank EFG-Hermes, Reuters reports.

All seven have been released on bail but barred from travel. The Mubarak brothers remain in custody pending Saturday’s verdict.

‘No coincidence’

Some of the anger that led to Mr Mubarak’s overthrow was fuelled by the belief that he and his sons had illegally amassed vast amounts of wealth.

Gamal, 48, was a leading politician in the former ruling National Democratic Party and was widely seen as his father’s heir apparent.

Alaa Mubarak, 50, is a businessman who largely kept out of politics.

If the pair are found guilty of abusing power to amass wealth on Saturday, they are expected to be sentenced to between five and 10 years in prison.

The timing of the new charges cannot be a coincidence, says the BBC’s Jon Leyne in Cairo.

Speculation is growing in Egypt, he says, about what will happen to Hosni Mubarak, his family and associates, in court on Saturday.

The new charges could mean that Gamal and Alaa would be kept in custody even if they are acquitted on the existing charges.

And if the former president should be released, he adds, it is likely to provoke more tension and possibly trouble on the streets.

Earlier, a policeman found guilty at Cairo Criminal Court of killing 18 protesters was sentenced to five years in jail.

According to state news agency Mena, Mohammed Ibrahim was convicted of “spraying bullets randomly on peaceful protesters outside the police station on 28 January 2011.”

Ibrahim had earlier been sentenced to death in absentia, but was granted a retrial after handing himself in.

Montreal police have released the name of a man wanted in connection with the delivery of a human left foot to the Conservative Party of Canada headquarters in Ottawa and the discovery of body parts found in Ottawa and Montreal.

Police said Luka Rocco Magnotta, also known as Eric Clinton Newman, is currently at large and police are looking for the public’s help to find him.

Police said Magnotta knew the victim whose torso was found in Montreal on Tuesday.

The discovery of the torso is believed to be linked to the discovery of the foot sent the Conservative headquarters and a left hand found at a Canada Post terminal.

The hand and foot mailed to Ottawa were sent from a fake Montreal address, police said.

The hand and foot are undergoing testing at a Toronto forensics laboratory but could now be moved to Montreal, police said. The torso, which police said is from a Caucasian man’s body, is undergoing tests in Montreal.

‘Never forget’ horrible odour

The left foot was discovered Tuesday after Ottawa police were called to the Conservative Party of Canada headquarters at 130 Albert St.

A party spokesman told CBC News the package was brought to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s campaign manager Jenni Byrne. She examined the package after it was opened, he said, but called police when she saw the blood and smelled the odour.

“Conservative Party staff are very upset and disturbed by what happened yesterday. It was such a horrible odour I’m sure many of us will never forget it,” said Fred DeLorey, director of communications for the party.

The hazardous materials unit was called in and the coroner soon confirmed the package contained a human foot that was somewhat decomposed.

While investigating the foot, police found a second body part in a package at a Canada Post terminal at Riverside and Alta Vista drives in south Ottawa.

Major Crimes Staff Sgt. Bruce Pirt said the foot was delivered through Canada Post and conceded it is possible it was sent as a “gruesome message”.

The foot was decomposing, Pirt added, but he would not say whether the foot belonged to a male or female.

Public safety minister reacts

The grisly discoveries in Ottawa and Montreal continued to garner reaction on Parliament Hill Wednesday as questions surround the circumstances of the body parts.

“It’s certainly an unusual development and it’s not even insofar as homicides go. It’s quite an unusual circumstance,” said Public Safety Minister Vic Toews.

Liberal MP Justin Trudeau also commented by saying “there’s someone sick out there.” He also said constituents in his Montreal riding of Papineau are worried about their safety.

Ottawa police have added there could be more body parts in the mail but it is unlikely they are in Ottawa.

Several Abbotsford, B.C., seniors whose homes will be bulldozed are calling for more compensation from the landowner, who is closing the manufactured home park where they live.

“This is a horrible, horrible situation to put people in,” said resident Barb Lewis. “None of us knew that when we bought in here — we had absolutely no idea.”

Karen Matty, a prominent developer in Abbotsford whose family owns the park with 100 homes on it, is offering tenants of Garden Village approximately $11,000 to vacate, so the 5.3 hectares can be redeveloped.

The seniors own their manufactured homes and rent the “pads” they sit on, for approximately $400 per month. Most of the homes are too old to be moved.

“Some residents have bought into this park within the past two years at a cost of $70,000 to $80,000 and had asked if the park is safe and will remain as a mobile home park, and they were told yes, this park will remain,” said 60-year-old resident Ron Leitch.

“What about all the money we’ve invested? What’s to happen to that? What’s to happen to us?” said Lewis, 61. “I would like to see [Matty] provide us with an adequate place to live.”

Homes turned to rubble

Almost half the residents from the retirement community have taken the compensation deal and some of the homes have already been levelled.

“Large machinery sits on these empty lots waiting for their next crushing of a senior’s home,” said Leitch.

“I see all the people’s dreams crushed. Being hauled out in a dump truck,” said Lewis. “So many of us put everything we had into these homes. Many of us have health problems. We can’t start over.”

Lewis, who has multiple sclerosis, said she invested $71,000 to buy and renovate the home where she now cares for her 92-year-old mother, who has Alzheimer’s disease.

Approximately $40,000 of that was borrowed money — cash advances on credit cards — to fix up the place after they bought it. Another $16,900 was a renovation loan from the federal government.

“When we bought in here, mother had said ‘I want to die here.’ And now she’s not going to have that option. Her heart went into this place — as did mine,” said Lewis, choking back tears.

Residents say it’s unnerving to hear the bulldozer knocking down homes beside them.

She and other residents said they have low fixed incomes and no other assets, so they fear they won’t find a comparable place they can afford. Most have pets and some can’t climb stairs.

Lewis and her mother have two dogs, which they won’t part with.

“[Mother] said if we have to pitch a tent in somebody’s backyard we are not getting rid of our dogs. And she’s a very stubborn woman,” said Lewis.

Limited time offer

The manager of the park says residents have only a few months to take the $11,000 offer, or risk getting less when it closes.

“I think we’ve been pretty fair,” said manager Paul Hague, who is also Matty’s son-in-law. “From a business standpoint — you get to a point with a place like this where it’s over.”

Provincial law stipulates owners must give residents one year’s notice of eviction, plus a minimum of one year of paid rent — which in this case would be approximately $5,500.

Manager Paul Hague says the infrastructure is failing and the owner wants to sell or redevelop.

The current offer is double that — equal to two years of pad rent — which is also what the City of Abbotsford requires landowners to pay residents in order to get redevelopment approval. The owner has not yet applied for redevelopment.

“I think this is a better avenue to say, ‘Look people, it’s coming to an end — what do you want to do? Here’s an opportunity financially’ and that’s what we are doing,” said Hague.

He said the infrastructure is failing and the owner would rather sell or redevelop than spend the money on repairs or upgrades.

“It’s just time. If the water main blows or the electrical shuts down again, we’re just not putting the money back into it,” said Hague, who also said he had no idea what it would cost to fix the problems.

Calls for more compensation

The developer stands to make several million dollars from the sale or redevelopment of the property, which is in a busy commercial area. The residents said they understand the park must close, but they want more compensation.

“We know she has the right to develop this property and make multimillions of dollars — and yet she won’t give the seniors of this park enough seed money to help them start over,” said Leitch.

The provincial association representing manufactured home owners says 1,850 B.C. seniors have lost their homes in the last few years through park closures.

B.C. Housing Minister Rich Coleman says the government has no plans to change the law governing evictions.

It said some of them ended up in nursing homes because they lost their support system.

“No one should be forced to leave their home without being fairly compensated for it,” said Joyce Klein of the Active Manufactured Home Owners Association.

Klein said this is a problem across Canada. She wants the B.C. law beefed up, to require landowners to give residents fair market value or assessed value for their homes when they can’t be moved. She said some municipalities already require fair compensation, beyond the provincial minimum, while others have few rules.

“It’s time B.C. showed the other provinces how people can be protected,” said Klein.

No changes from province

The minister responsible says the government has no plans to increase the compensation required provincewide.

“The act itself has functioned, for the most part, pretty well,” said Housing Minister Rich Coleman. He suggested municipalities work with owners to convert parks into complexes where residents can buy their own lots.

“Some municipalities have taken up some of my suggestions over the years as to how they could bare-land strata and allow people to buy their lots and allow the owner of the property to get out of the ownership of the property,” said Coleman.

Lewis and Leitch said they accept the park will close — they simply want more help from the landowner, so they don’t have to move in with family or into care facilities.

“It’s a very cold harsh reality. And it’s been a horrible horrible wake-up call for all of us,” said Lewis.

“When we bought in here, mother had said ‘I want to die here.’ And now she’s not going to have that option. Her heart went into this place — as did mine,” said Lewis, choking back tears.

Residents say it’s unnerving to hear the bulldozer knocking down homes beside them.

She and other residents said they have low fixed incomes and no other assets, so they fear they won’t find a comparable place they can afford. Most have pets and some can’t climb stairs.

Lewis and her mother have two dogs, which they won’t part with.

“[Mother] said if we have to pitch a tent in somebody’s backyard we are not getting rid of our dogs. And she’s a very stubborn woman,” said Lewis.

The manager of the park says residents have only a few months to take the $11,000 offer, or risk getting less when it closes.

“I think we’ve been pretty fair,” said manager Paul Hague, who is also Matty’s son-in-law. “From a business standpoint — you get to a point with a place like this where it’s over.”

Provincial law stipulates owners must give residents one year’s notice of eviction, plus a minimum of one year of paid rent — which in this case would be approximately $5,500.

The current offer is double that — equal to two years of pad rent — which is also what the City of Abbotsford requires landowners to pay residents in order to get redevelopment approval. The owner has not yet applied for redevelopment.

“I think this is a better avenue to say, ‘Look people, it’s coming to an end — what do you want to do? Here’s an opportunity financially’ and that’s what we are doing,” said Hague.

He said the infrastructure is failing and the owner would rather sell or redevelop than spend the money on repairs or upgrades.

“It’s just time. If the water main blows or the electrical shuts down again, we’re just not putting the money back into it,” said Hague, who also said he had no idea what it would cost to fix the problems.

B.C. Housing Minister Rich Coleman says the government has no plans to change the law governing evictions.

It said some of them ended up in nursing homes because they lost their support system.

“No one should be forced to leave their home without being fairly compensated for it,” said Joyce Klein of the Active Manufactured Home Owners Association.

Klein said this is a problem across Canada. She wants the B.C. law beefed up, to require landowners to give residents fair market value or assessed value for their homes when they can’t be moved. She said some municipalities already require fair compensation, beyond the provincial minimum, while others have few rules.

“It’s time B.C. showed the other provinces how people can be protected,” said Klein.

No changes from province

The minister responsible says the government has no plans to increase the compensation required provincewide.

“The act itself has functioned, for the most part, pretty well,” said Housing Minister Rich Coleman. He suggested municipalities work with owners to convert parks into complexes where residents can buy their own lots.

Aroldis Chapman has had one strange season so far, even if you don’t take into consideration any of his outstanding season on the field. Away from his 0.000 ERA and 44 strikeouts in just 26 innings, he’s been sued, arrest and now robbed.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Chapman’s hotel room at the Omni William Penn was robbed Tuesday night while Chapman and the Reds were playing the Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. In addition to the robbery, police found a 26-year-old woman tied up and crying.

Two guests at the hotel heard a woman screaming for help and then saw a woman inside an open room with her hands bound by cloth napkins, according to the news release from Pittsburgh police.

The woman was identified as “the hotel guest of a male who attended the Pirates baseball game and who was not present at the time of the incident. During this incident the male guest had various items taken and was later interviewed by detectives,” the release said.

The woman told police a man claimed to be from the hotel’s maintenance department and was there to fix a toilet. When she let the man in the room, he demanded items from the room, and when she declined, he tied her up and took jewelry, clothing, a computer, credit cards and ID cards.

The Reds released the following statement:

We are aware of the hotel room robbery of one of our players and are working with local law enforcement agencies. Because it is an active police investigation, we have no other comment at this time.

RCMP in Burnaby, B.C., are seeking an armed and dangerous suspect in an attempted murder and the recent double homicide at a metro Vancouver-area sushi restaurant.

Police say Angus David Mitchell is living out of his 1994 green Ford Aerostar Van with B.C. licence 591 PTG.

Police have issued an urgent warning that Angus David Mitchell, 26, is believed to be armed with a high-powered Mossberg Maverick rifle with a scope and living out of his 1994 green Ford Aerostar Van with B.C. licence 591 PTG.

“He is considered emotionally unstable and for this reason police are asking for help from the public to find him. If spotted, he should not be approached or confronted, but 911 should be called immediately,” said a statement issued by police on Wednesday morning.

Mitchell, a former security guard who is not known to police, is five feet four inches tall and weighs 121 pounds.

Angus David Mitchell,26, is a former security guard who is not known to police. 

“Anyone who knows Mitchell and has had a conflict with him in the past needs to be extremely cautious about their personal safety and should contact the Burnaby RCMP at  604 294-7611. This would include former co-workers, employers, landlords, roommates or anyone else who Mitchell has had a conflict with at any time in the past.”

Employees at his former security company in Victoria say police have already warned them about the situation.

Investigators are also asking operators of motels, restaurants and businesses to check their parking lots for Mitchell’s green Aerostar van.

“The public is asked to be on the lookout for this van in parking lots or isolated locations where he may be staying in it overnight,” said police.

Wanted for recent double homicide

Police said Mitchell is a person of interest in the May 27 double homicide inside a sushi restaurant on Royal Oak in Burnaby. No motive for the homicides has been established.

Mitchell is wanted in connection with the attempted murder of a 51-year-old Burnaby man who was shot on May 29 in front of his home in the 4400 block of Gilpin Crescent in Burnaby, police say.

The victim, a former landlord of Mitchell’s, survived the shooting but is in hospital in serious condition, say police.

Police say Mitchell may be armed with a high-powered high-powered Mossberg Maverick rifle with a scope like this one.

Greg Rubar, 42, has waited tables at D’Amico’s Italian Market Cafe in Houston for 16 years. But his car was flooded during a thunderstorm weeks ago and so he had been taking taxis to work and borrowing the restaurant’s catering truck from the owners.

But on Saturday, a couple who have been coming to the restaurant for about eight years gave him an envelope of cash to help solve his car troubles.

“He said, ‘I’m not going to be giving you a tip for a while. Take this money. Go buy yourself a car,’ ” Rubar told the Houston Chronicle.

“I’m just humbled by it, that’s all,” Rubar told Houston’s ABC affiliate KTRK.

The couple wishes to remain anonymous.

Rubar’s mother, Annetta Rubar-Staff, said her son is a “hard worker” who is on his feet all day at the popular restaurant.

“They just love him because he gives good service to them,” she said.

She said her “shy” son has been inundated by the recent media attention because of the gift.

“He’s kind of embarrassed because everyone came and talked to him,” she said.

His boss is overwhelmed at the generosity of the two customers, KTRK reported.

“And also that we have staff that our customers feel so close to that they could willingly and wantingly do something like that for them,” the restaurant’s VP Brina D’Amico said.

The money is technically a gift, not a tip, because it was not attached to a bill.

“It’s enough money to go buy you a nice car. I didn’t even look at it. I was hesitant about it, but he said, ‘No you take it and buy you a car!’” Rubar told KTRK. “People can be generous, you know? They told me they felt like I deserved this.”

Rubar said he has not seen the couple since they gave him the gift, but he would like to tell them:

“Thank you very, very much. I mean I did need it and I’m gonna buy a car with it; that’s what that money’s gonna go to — every cent,” he said.

Havir says a friend was watching DiiDii on May 17 at his home near Indian School Road and Hayden in Scottsdale. She says the dog got out through a side door and hasn’t been seen since.

Havir says DiiDii has a microchip so a veterinarian or shelter would be able to locate the owner.

DiiDii is about 2 1/2 years old, weighs 60 pounds and was wearing a silver choke collar when she went missing.

Havir says she will pay the money, no questions asked, if it means having DiiDii back.

An Ohio man is fighting a littering ticket he says he got when he tried to give money to a panhandler in a wheelchair, and the cash fell to the ground.

A Cleveland police spokeswoman says the panhandler was at a busy intersection and that it’s illegal to solicit or give money at the side of a roadway.

John Davis, of Elyria (eh-LEER’-ee-uh), says he reached out of his vehicle on May 17 to give a panhandler a couple of dollars, but the money dropped. He was then given a $344 ticket.

WJW-TV reports that Davis could have been ticketed for donating to a panhandler but was cited for a potentially more expensive violation.

Davis pleaded not guilty Tuesday.

Dominic Monaghan — “Lord of the Rings” hobbit and the man once known as redeemed drug addict Charlie Pace on “Lost” — recently made a striking statement on Twitter. It was the sort of thing that simply does not fit succinctly on one’s hand the way that “Not Penny’s boat” once did. During a Q&A with fans, one woman asked him if he would convince his former co-star Matthew Fox to join Twitter. Monaghan’s response was a jaw-dropper:

Yes, Charlie Pace flat-out called Jack Shephard an assaulter of women. And just in case anyone thought he was kidding, or that his fingers were momentarily possessed and tweeted the wrong thing (maybe he meant to say “He beatboxes about women?”), he then said this:

“an accusation is when you ‘claim’ someone did something wrong. i know.”

When a Twitter follower suggested that Fox could sue him for making such public statements, he responded:

These comments sat largely unnoticed on Monaghan’s Twitter feed late Sunday and all day Monday, until Tuesday, when the blog Jezebel picked them up. Then RumorFix followed suit, followed by Vulture, followed by multiple other media outlets.

Look, let’s be clear about one thing first: We don’t know that Fox has hit several women and does so on a regular basis. We do know that he was accused of punching that party bus driver last summer in Ohio in a case that still may go before a civil jury. But that’s all we have, from a public evidence standpoint, to go on; he and his reps have never commented on that situation, nor his DUI charge from earlier this month, nor Monaghan’s recent comments.

All that being said, if Monaghan is right — and he seems quite confident that he is — then the saddest thing about this whole affair would be that women were victimized and remained silent about it. Open. Shut. The end.

But it’s also striking to see an actor call out one of his colleagues for committing alleged criminal behavior, and to do so in such a blunt, damning manner. Some think Monaghan is brave for speaking up; others think he’s a jerk for ratting out a former co-worker and friend. Either way, it’s an astonishing thing to witness, even in this era of excessive mouth-running on Twitter, Reddit and Facebook. Celebrities occasionally dish about each other, but they usually keep their mouths shut about the purported darker sides of their fellow colleagues’ natures. And for “Lost” fans, this whole thing is a bit depressing because it blows to smithereens that admittedly naive perception that everyone on the show was surely great friends with each other. I mean, they survived a plane crash together. And then they all reunited at the end in that church and hugged and agreed to walk into that weird white light together, which was heart-warming even though it totally ticked off millions of people. And Charlie Pace’s life was saved by Jack during the flash-sideways, so they must be really tight in real life, right?

Well, no, said Monaghan in that tweet embedded above. “How do you know we ever did?” he asked the fan who wondered how Monaghan could say such things about Fox when they shared so many good times. “You don’t know either of us.”

He’s right. We don’t know them. But because we watched them on a TV show that we deeply loved, we feel like we do. And for some reason, that love makes many people want to believe that the sense of community that was such a consistent theme on “Lost” translates into the real world. But it didn’t necessarily. At least not for everybody.

Although, if it’s any consolation, Monaghan and Jorge Garcia still seem to be on the kind of good terms one would expect from the Charlie/Hurley friendship. After Monaghan referred to Garcia as “extremely huggable,” during that Twitter Q&A, Garcia tweeted him back.

Garcia has not tweeted at all about Monaghan’s Fox comments. But since we’ve established that we tend to think of these individuals as their characters even though they clearly are not, I can only assume his response to this whole episode mirrored mine: Dude

Chris Hayes, host of “Up With Chris Hayes” on MSNBC, has apologized for comments he made about American soldiers during a pre-Memorial Day discussion Sunday.

During a discussion of family notification about the death of a loved one on the battlefield, Hayes told his panel, “I think it is very difficult to talk about the war dead and the fallen without invoking valor, without invoking the words ‘heroes.’ Why do I feel so [uncomfortable] about the word ‘hero’? I feel comfortable — uncomfortable — about the word because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war.”

While Hayes went on to say that he didn’t mean to disrespect those fallen soldiers who truly were heroes — and even qualified his statement by saying he might be wrong in his thinking — he set off a controversy nonetheless.

After a day of angry comments from bloggers, Tweeters and commenters, Hayes released a statement on his website, apologizing for his comments.

“On Sunday, in discussing the uses of the word ‘hero’ to describe those members of the armed forces who have given their lives, I don’t think I lived up to the standards of rigor, respect and empathy for those affected by the issues we discuss that I’ve set for myself. I am deeply sorry for that.”

A settlement with the employee who made allegations of sexual harassment against former L.A. schools Supt. Ramon C. Cortines threatened to unravel Tuesday over disputed terms of the agreement and its disclosure by the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The allegations also have had fallout at the Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts, which sent a delegation Tuesday to meet with Board of Education President Monica Garcia over changing the downtown school’s name.

The harassment allegations arose from an encounter between Graham and the former superintendent at Cortines’ ranch in Kern County in July 2010. In a statement, Cortines last week described what happened as an episode of consensual, “adult behavior.”

Scot Graham contended, through his attorneys, that Cortines had made inappropriate sexual advances.

The school system announced last week that the Board of Education had approved paying $200,000 and providing lifetime benefits to Graham, a senior manager for 12 years in the facilities division. In exchange, Graham agreed to resign as of May 31, the district said at a media briefing.

Officials also acknowledged they could not confirm that the agreement had been signed, but they said they anticipated no hold-ups.

That optimism was premature, in part because of the district’s announcement, which was managed by the public relations firm Cerrell & Associates.

“The press briefing occurred without Mr. Graham’s consent to be publicly identified, and before an agreement was signed,” according to a statement from Graham’s attorneys. “No final agreement has been reached.”

Graham’s attorneys also have disputed a timeline of events, supplied by the district, suggesting that officials handled the matter sensitively from the start. In addition, they said Graham understood the value of the lifetime health benefits to be $300,000, whereas the district told reporters the value was $250,000. That discrepancy has given them pause, they said, as well as additional reason to question the school system’s good faith.

The school system said it is sticking to the settlement agreed upon by both sides.

“The district relied on Mr. Graham’s acceptance and stands by the terms reached,” said Linda Savitt, an outside attorney representing the school system.

State law would prevent the district from firing Graham, who was earning $150,000 a year, for bringing a sexual-harassment allegation.

The harassment allegations revived a sore spot in how the arts high school was named. Garcia and her colleagues had overriden pledges to give students, parents and teachers a key role in choosing a name for the campus when the board decided to name it for Cortines.

A group of school leaders met with Garcia for 90 minutes Tuesday, raising that issue. In a letter, they stated concern about “how the name of our school will be associated with improper actions by a former superintendent.”

“The stigma,” they wrote, “is already negatively affecting [student] morale, perception of ethics, and self-esteem.”

Garcia was not persuaded, saying later that Cortines had long been a champion of arts education and also was instrumental in developing the school.

She suggested creating a supplemental, unofficial diploma with both the school’s current name and its former, temporary one: Los Angeles Central High School No. 9.

In an interview, Principal Norm Isaacs said that, for him, the most vital matter was budget cuts that could result in the layoffs of 11 of 14 arts teachers.

Garcia told them she was hopeful the district could work out a deal with the teachers union for cost-saving furlough days, which would preserve all or most of the jobs.

Rudy Eugene walked naked alongside the MacArthur Causeway before pouncing on a homeless man he found dozing in the shade of the elevated Metromover train tracks.

For almost 18 grisly minutes, Eugene savaged his victim, punching him and stripping the man’s pants before gnawing off the homeless man’s face — all as cars and cyclists rolled by on the busy causeway on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

The new details of the horrific attack were captured in additional video footage taken by security cameras at the nearby Miami Herald building.

At least five passersby, including a Road Ranger from the Florida Department of Transportation, called police to report what they saw of the macabre scene. Three bicyclists pedaled by the two bloody men in the minutes before the arrival of Miami police officer Jose Rivera, who shot and killed Eugene to end the attack, the new footage shows. The shooting itself was obstructed in the video, and the officer appeared to shoot Eugene within a minute of arriving.

On Tuesday police identified Eugene’s victim as Ronald Poppo, a 65-year-old homeless man who has lived on Miami’s streets for more than three decades. With his nose, mouth and eyes torn off, he remained in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.

The new video, and information from police, suggest that Eugene stumbled upon Poppo by sheer happenstance.

The footage shows Eugene walking naked on the sidewalk along the Biscayne Boulevard off-ramp of the causeway at around 1:55 p.m. Saturday when he paused in a shady spot under the Metromover Omni loop line. Eugene appeared to twirl as a bicyclist zoomed by. For about two minutes, Eugene bent over a second figure in the shade, though the images are obscured by a rustling palm frond.

Eugene then rolled Poppo out onto the sunny sidewalk, stripping off his clothes while Poppo appeared to kick in resistance. Eugene later appeared to straddle Poppo and hunch over him for several minutes.

Meanwhile, two more cyclists passed by, and one motorist in a white car slowed down while descending the off-ramp. But for many motorists, the scene was obscured by a waist-high concrete safety wall along the highway.

According to Miami police, the first call of a disturbance came from a passing motorist who reported seeing Eugene stripping off his clothes and acting erratically. That call was routed to the Florida Highway Patrol — it’s unclear why — and then transferred to the Miami police. Police have not disclosed the time of the first call.

A Road Ranger called to the scene also called 911 and used a loudspeaker to call for the naked attacker to cease. As the attack dragged on, two other motorists called police, as did another cyclist, Larry Vega, who later told reporters that Eugene “just stood, his head up like that, with pieces of flesh in his mouth. And he growled.”

At about 2:11 p.m. — 16 minutes after the attack began — a Miami police patrol car briefly turned up the causeway ramp, against traffic, before turning around, the video shows.

About two minutes later, the patrol car turned against traffic again and drove up the ramp to scene, just south of the Miami Herald’s parking garage. Just a few seconds after stepping from his car to confront the attacker, Officer Rivera drew his gun, but it’s unclear when he fired on Eugene, killing the 31-year-old man. A second officer arrived about one minute later.

Police have just begun to piece together Eugene’s actions in the hours before the attack.

It appears Eugene had been in Miami Beach — in full party mode for Urban Beach Week over the Memorial Day Weekend — shortly before the attack. Eugene’s car, a purple 1995 Chevrolet Caprice, was towed for being parked illegally at 1100 10th St.

The night before, Eugene had been with his girlfriend in Miami Gardens. She reported that he was acting strangely before leaving in his car. According to police, Eugene later called her to say that his car broke down.

Still unclear is what motivated the attack. Though some have speculated that Eugene was under the influence of some kind of stimulants or other drugs that sometimes cause violent episodes, police said they found no evidence of drugs or paraphernalia at the scene. Toxicology tests of Eugene’s blood will likely take several weeks.

After a long, much-chronicled pregnancy, Jessica Simpson and fiance Eric Johnson welcomed a baby girl this morning.

The singer announced the arrival of Maxwell Drew Johnson on her website, saying the baby weighed in at 9 lbs. 13 ounces.

“We are so grateful for all the love, support and prayers we have received,” she said in a statement. “This has been the greatest experience of our lives!!”

Close to her due date, the “Fashion Star” mentor tweeted about a dream she had. “I just woke up from a dream that I wore a leopard caftan in the hospital,” she wrote. “Fabulous!! Now I need to find one!”

She dispelled multiple rumors that she had already given birth: “To everyone who keeps congratulating me on the birth of my baby girl…I’m still pregnant!!” Simpson tweeted at the end of April. “Don’t believe what you read ladies and gents.”

In March, she gushed to Ryan Seacrest about her sex life, saying “I’m kind of unstoppable at the moment! Like the big ‘O’ is like the biggest ‘O’ ever.” She frequently shared the details of her uncomfortable pregnancy, telling Jay Leno in March, “I just started calling myself ‘Swamp A**. Former city Rep. Beto O’Rourke bucked a nationwide trend Tuesday night by ousting eight-term U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes in the 16th Congressional District race.

In the final tally, O’Rourke beat Reyes by 23,248 votes to 20,427, or 50.5 percent to 44.4 percent.

Nationally, challengers rarely defeat incumbents in primary elections, and only a few exceptions have occurred so far this election cycle.

When the first numbers were posted earlier Tuesday evening — the results of early voting — O’Rourke had a healthy 51.3 percent to 43.3 percent lead, but Reyes was closing the gap as the evening progressed. However, he was not able to garner enough votes to push the race into a runoff election.

“Can you all just confirm for me that this is really happening?” O’Rourke asked the hundreds of supporters at The Garden who answered with a deafening cheer. “I want to thank all of you for making this possible.”

Earlier, after hearing results minus only two precincts, O’Rourke’s campaign staff hoisted him into the air and then doused him with Champagne while chanting, “Beto! Beto! Beto!”

“I feel really good,” O’Rourke said earlier. “I ran as hard a race as I knew how. I went to every debate and forum to meet people and listen to them and address their concerns.”

Reyes blamed what he said was negative media coverage, $240,000 spent in El Paso by a super PAC targeting longtime incumbents for defeat, and “my opponent who deliberately ran a nasty, dirty campaign.”

Asked whether he had made any mistakes, Reyes said: “If we hadn’t done what we did — phone banking, contacting over 30,000 homes, the kinds of things we did — we ran a professional campaign.”

Standing in front of an East Side elementary school just after the polls closed, O’Rourke took a call from someone reporting the early results. Slowly, a smile spread over his face and he said, “Sounds pretty good.”

Downtown, on the top floor of the DoubleTree Hotel, Reyes supporters exchanged worried glances when the first results were posted. They looked at their phones and tablets in anticipation of new numbers.

Reyes was briefed by a staff member as he walked off the elevator. He retreated back into the elevator, and the staffer promised he would soon return. Three hours later he returned for news media interviews, but he left before the final results were recorded.

A Coronado High School exit poll conducted by students during early voting and on election day showed Reyes edging O’Rourke among voters identifying themselves as Democrats.

O’Rourke racked up large margins among voters saying they were independents or Republicans, which represented about a third of Democratic primary voters, according to the exit poll.

About two-thirds of voters said they were Hispanic, and they favored Reyes by almost 9 percentage points. But O’Rourke carried the non-Hispanic vote by almost 50 points, according to the poll results.

The exit poll of more than 900 Democratic primary voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The race — defined by some as experience versus new blood — probably will determine who takes a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in the Nov. 6 general election because the El Paso electorate is heavily Democratic.

Reyes campaigned on his experience and connections in Washington, D.C., which he said helped save Fort Bliss from closure. The post, he warned, could face another Base Realignment and Closure process, which would require an experienced hand.

Reyes also touted the billions of federal dollars spent on an unprecedented post expansion, and millions of dollars in federal stimulus money he secured for El Paso.

But much of the Fort Bliss expansion money, O’Rourke said, went to out-of-town contractors. And he accused Reyes of being out of touch with his constituents.

O’Rourke said he connected to voters by personally ringing more than 16,000 doorbells across the county. And he said people told him they were ready for change.

In those over-the-fence conversations, O’Rourke said, he found common themes. El Paso needed economic stimulus, which means good jobs, and a full-service Veterans Affairs hospital.

O’Rourke hammered Reyes for not solving the problem of long waits at the international bridges. He said those bottlenecks are choking off millions of dollars in commerce and threatening tens of thousands of jobs.

During the campaign, Reyes agreed that a new VA hospital is necessary. Regarding the bridge waits, he said newly elected Republicans, unwilling to compromise on spending issues, had blocked his $5 billion bill that would solve those problems.

Reyes accused O’Rourke of being na ve about the way things work in Congress.

The congressman also made an issue of O’Rourke’s stand on legalizing marijuana, which Reyes opposed. O’Rourke said it would deny cartels a major profit source, potentially reducing violence in Juárez, and allowing the drug to be better regulated. He also said he would not pursue the issue in Congress because voters did not consider it a priority.

Reyes, to prove his status in Washington, brought a string of high-level officials to El Paso, including former President Bill Clinton, who personally reaffirmed an endorsement delivered earlier in a video. Reyes also received an endorsement from President Barack Obama.

But Reyes had other connections that were problematic, O’Rourke said.

He accused Reyes of being too close to people involved in the public corruption investigations and other criminal activity. And he pointed to campaign donations Reyes received from some of those people.

Reyes has not been accused of any wrongdoing and said he set aside the money, which will be donated to charity after convictions or confessions.

In the final week of the race, as the campaigns took on an increasingly negative tone, Reyes attacked O’Rourke’s character.

A Reyes campaign television advertisement recounted the circumstances of O’Rourke’s burglary and driving-while-intoxicated arrests in the middle to late ’90s. O’Rourke said he responded to those charges during his successful campaign for City Council when he apologized for making bad decisions as a young man. He said he had tried to give back to the community since then.

The Reyes ad drove home its point with a recent cellphone video that allegedly showed O’Rourke intoxicated and rolling on a barroom floor.

O’Rourke, admitting it was him, said he slipped and fell when dancing. He denied being drunk.

The O’Rourke campaign countered with an ad outlining the circumstances of a no-bid federal contract awarded to a company that hired Reyes’ children and donated $17,000 to his re-election campaigns.

Reyes said he had nothing to do with awarding the contract or the hiring of his children.

O’Rourke will face Republican Barbara Carrasco in the Nov. 6 general election.

Other Democrats in the primary were Jerome Tilghman, Ben Mendoza and Paul Johnson Jr. They took a combined total of 5.2 percent of the vote.

“Power concedes nothing without a demand”: If a quote could sum up the Throne’s “No Church in the Wild” music video, Frederick Douglass’ famed call for revolution might do it best.

Neither Kanye West nor Jay-Z actually appear in their Romain Gavras-directed clip, which was released online Tuesday (May 29) — and, frankly, an appearance by the megastar duo could’ve very well hindered the powerful message they were trying to send.

Of course, there is nothing in the video that directly details a specific storyline or plot: Instead, viewers are expected to rely on their own interpretations of the scenes that look taken straight from CNN.

Fearless protestors hurl stones and fight armed officers using only their bare fists. In one scene, a cop who rides atop a horse chases a revolutionary down an alleyway and beats him with a club. Young men are beaten, choked, sprayed with mace and dragged across the concrete as Frank Ocean soulfully croons, “Will he make it out alive?” in time with the staged anarchy.

The gritty violence and social commentary are reminiscent of Gavras’ video for M.I.A.’s “Born Free.” Though “No Church” isn’t as graphic (there’s no nudity or massive death scenes), it is moving all the same.

By the end of the five-minute video, the freedom fighters seem to have notched a victory of some sort, standing in triumph in the face of their oppressors. But even if a single battle is won, there is no conclusive ending, meaning that the war still rages on.

One of the catchiest lines in the song is a party-weary Kanye spitting, “Sunglasses and Advil/ Last night was mad real.” After the track’s war-torn visual, the lyric can (and should) take on new meaning.

San Antonio is halfway to turning the Western Conference finals into a runaway.

Tony Parker scored 34 points, Manu Ginobili added 20 and the Spurs stayed perfect in the playoffs with a 120-111 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 2 on Tuesday night.

The Spurs set an NBA record with their 20th consecutive victory bridging the regular season and the playoffs. They came in sharing the longest such streak with the 2000-01 Lakers, who won 19 straight before losing to Philadelphia in the first game of the finals.

Those Lakers went on to win the championship and there’s no reason yet to think the Spurs won’t do the same. They put on an offensive clinic for three quarters, shooting 60 percent from the field and leading by as many as 22 points in the third quarter.

The Thunder made a late surge to get within six points, but Parker, Ginobili and Tim Duncan helped San Antonio put the Thunder in a 2-0 deficit with Game 3 Thursday night in Oklahoma City.

Kevin Durant had 31 points and James Harden rebounded from a rough Game 1 to score 30 for the Thunder, who have lost two straight for the first time since early April. Oklahoma City dropped to 15-4 in games after losses this season.

San Antonio picked up where it left off from the 39-point fourth quarter that turned Game 1 on Sunday. With sharp passes and hot shooting, the Spurs jumped to a 19-9 lead after the Thunder missed six of their first seven shots and had three turnovers in the first 4 minutes.

Durant settled down Oklahoma City with four early baskets, including a 3-pointer. The Spurs shot 52 percent (12 for 23) in the opening quarter, though, and led 28-22.

Durant was on the bench at the start of the second quarter, and Parker and the Spurs put together a 14-4 spurt to stretch the gap to 13 points.

Russell Westbrook hammered Parker’s arm on a drive and he crumpled to the court. That didn’t faze Parker, who scored the Spurs’ next seven points to keep San Antonio rolling.

The Spurs shot 58 percent (22 of 38) and had 13 assists in the first half. They also cut down their turnovers, committing only six in the first half after giving away 14 in the first two quarters of Game 1.

After taking six shots in the first 9 minutes, Durant managed just four shots the rest of the half.

The Spurs resumed picking apart Oklahoma City’s defense with precision passes after the break, scoring on five straight possessions. San Antonio was shooting 63 percent from the field and 64 percent from 3-point range at one point (7 for 11).

The biggest cheer from the crowd came after Ginobili flipped a behind-the-back pass to Parker in the corner for another 3 and the lead ballooned to 78-58.

Oklahoma City called a timeout, and Durant screamed at his teammates in the huddle. He started a modest 6-0 run with a pullup jumper and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich called a timeout, yelling at Parker as he came off the court.

Popovich continued screaming in the huddle, but by the time the teams headed back to the court, he and Parker were arm-in-arm, talking and nodding in agreement.

Late in the third quarter, the Thunder began intentionally fouling Tiago Splitter, a 32 percent free-throw shooter during the playoffs.

In 1962, Doc Watson and some of his musician neighbors set out from their home in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the journey of a lifetime, to perform at the Ash Grove folk club in Los Angeles.

“I remember the first trip we did,” Watson said in a 2008 interview. “We borrowed a little station wagon from the late Clarence Ashley’s son and drove to California and back, and I remember thinking, ‘Lord, what a big old country this is.’ I was a mountaineer, just a country boy. I’d never been nowhere like that before.”

Within a few years, Watson seemingly had been everywhere, as his prowess on guitar and his vast store of traditional Southern music made the blind musician an internationally celebrated artist.

Watson, 89, who recorded more than 50 albums and won seven Grammy Awards, died Tuesday at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., according to his representatives at Folklore Productions, a Santa Monica management company. He had undergone colon surgery Thursday.

Although Watson is perhaps most acclaimed for his astonishing technique in both the flat-pick and finger-picking styles, his greatest contribution touched on broader concerns.

“Doc arrived at a point where there was the beginning of an audience for traditional music, but not really an informed group of people,” Ash Grove owner Ed Pearl said last week.

“Doc was by far the best traditional artist I ever met at talking openly about his people, and just having a casual conversation with an audience.… He was among the most versatile and un-self-conscious bringers of Southern white culture to the Ash Grove possible, and he did that right from the beginning.”

With his natural ease as a storyteller, his heartfelt baritone singing, his repository of material and his facility on guitar, Watson was a rare combination of authenticity and artistry.

His example inspired a generation of musicians to explore obscure musical pockets, as well as to upgrade their instrumental technique toward the remarkably high standards he established. He is one of the prime sources of the hybrid, roots-conscious Americana genre, and a key influence on such noted players as Norman Blake, Tony Rice, Buddy Miller and Dan Crary.

“Doc Watson sort of defined in many ways what Americana has become,” Jed Hilly, executive director of the Americana Music Assn., told The Times. “He played different styles of American roots music. He played traditional country, he played what would be traditional folk, he played what was traditional bluegrass, he played gospel. All those elements sort of interwoven, that’s what Buddy Miller does today.… Nothing is more definitive than Doc Watson’s appreciation for a broad spectrum of music in the Americana world.”

Watson received a National Medal of Arts in 1997 and a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy in 2004.

Remarkably, Watson was well into his 40s when he embarked on a serious music career.

Arthel Lane Watson was born March 3, 1923, one of nine children in a farming family in Deep Gap, N.C. Blinded by an eye infection before he was 2, he was encouraged by his father to be active on the farm. His father also helped foster his musical leanings.

Arthel received a new harmonica every Christmas; and when he was 11 his father made him a banjo, with the head formed from the skin of the family’s recently deceased cat. He got his first guitar at 13 and steeped himself in the music he heard on the Grand Ole Opry radio broadcasts and records by such country pioneers as Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family.

Watson and his brother Linney played on street corners in nearby Boone, and he later played in local country bands, developing a style influenced by Merle Travis, Eddy Arnold and Chet Atkins. He also tuned pianos to help support a new family — in 1947 he married his teenage cousin Rosa Lee Carlton, daughter of noted fiddler Gaither Carlton. Watson’s new in-law helped him stockpile his repertoire of traditional songs.

Nicknamed Doc by an announcer at a radio station where his group sometimes played, Watson joined a dance band in 1953, adding his electric guitar to its mix of country, pop, swing and square dance music. He had tried to play fiddle but was dissatisfied with his bowing skill, so he began to play the up-tempo fiddle leads on his Les Paul, a la Nashville session stars Grady Martin and Riley Puckett.

For Watson, the traditional acoustic music remained a private passion, so he was intrigued in the late 1950s when the Kingston Trio and other big-city singers began to find success interpreting the old songs.

But his own breakthrough came by accident. Musician and folklorist Ralph Rinzler traveled to the South to record old-time singer and banjo player Clarence “Tom” Ashley, who recruited some neighbors, including Watson, for the session. Watson had to borrow a friend’s Gibson because he didn’t own an acoustic guitar.

The recordings stirred up some interest, and Rinzler took the players to New York for a concert at Town Hall that helped coalesce the growing folk audience. Watson also got a booking at Gerde’s Folk City in Greenwich Village; and in 1962 Watson, Ashley and company headed west for their first Ash Grove engagement. They also played key folk festivals, including those at Newport, R.I., and UCLA.

Watson eventually followed Rinzler’s advice and emerged as a solo performer, though he was soon accompanied regularly by his guitarist son, Merle. For Watson, the career offered an opportunity to pull his weight and support his family, and one of his proudest moments was informing a North Carolina state agency that he no longer needed financial assistance for the blind.

It all came to a temporary halt when Merle was killed in a tractor accident in 1985, but after a hiatus Watson returned to the road. In 1988 he organized MerleFest, an informal folk music gathering in Wilkesboro, N.C., that has grown into one of the country’s major folk festivals.

Watson, who recorded for a variety of record labels, disliked touring because it kept him away from his home and family, and he first announced his retirement from the road in 1988. He gradually cut back on his schedule but continued to play occasional concerts.

On “Legacy,” a 2002 recording of music and conversation with Watson and musician David Holt, Watson is asked how he’d like to be remembered.

“Just as a good old, down-to-earth boy that didn’t think he was perfect and that loved music,” he says. “And I’d like to leave quite a few friends behind…. Other than that, I don’t want anybody putting me on a pedestal when I leave here. I’m just one of the people.”

Besides his wife of nearly 66 years, Watson is survived by his daughter Nancy Ellen, two grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and a brother, David.

Jim Paratore – the man who founded TMZ and created a slew of hit shows including “Ellen” and “Rosie” — died of an apparent heart attack Tuesday during a bike trip in France.

Jim was President of Telepictures — a division of Warner Bros. –  when he dreamed up the idea of getting into the digital business back in 2006.  Jim and Harvey developed the concept of TMZ … and Jim sold it to the big wigs, which was no small feat.

Jim was a driving force behind TMZ.com and then was critical in creating the TMZ television show.

Jim was a huge force in the TV business.  After Ellen DeGeneres came out, no one wanted to take a chance on her.  Jim recognized her great talent and literally went station to station across the country and convinced very nervous and reluctant general managers that they should take a chance on her — that she was a talent who could connect with and touch everyone … and Jim was right.

Jim was a triple threat — an amazingly creative guy who never let convention get in the way of a good idea.  He was also a great producer who could execute the ideas that were in his head.  And he was the best salesman in the world — Jim could convince anyone of anything.

His list of credits is endless.  On his watch, a slew of shows were produced, including “The People’s Court,” “The Bachelor,” “Extra,” “Judge Mathis”  and on and on.

He was also hilarious.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jill Wickert, and his daughter, Martinique Paratore.

Everyone at TMZ was touched by Jim’s brilliance and the loss is great and painful.

Jim was 58.

The mother and father of six children who died in a house fire in Derby have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Mick Philpott, 55, and his wife Mairead, 31, were arrested in Derby on Tuesday and are due to be questioned.

Jade Philpott, 10, and brothers John, nine, Jack, eight, Jessie, six and Jayden, five, died in the house fire on Victory Road on 11 May.

Another brother, Duwayne, 13, died three days later in hospital.

All six children were asleep upstairs when the fire began in the early hours.

Derbyshire Police said petrol was used to start the fire which was believed to have begun below the house’s letterbox.

Five days after the attack Mr and Mrs Philpott held a brief press conference and thanked those who tried to rescue the children and members of the local community for their support.

Speaking after the arrests, Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill said: “In view of the arrests, I would urge anyone who may have been holding back, not felt comfortable to voice their concerns or not had the confidence, to do so now.

“The latest arrests are just one step further in the investigation. It is absolutely vital that if you know anything you think could help us, come forward now, do not wait any longer.

“What we need to do now is carefully take our time, question the two individuals concerned and piece it together with everything else we know to date.”

Chief Constable Steve Cotterill: “We still need the support of the public out there”

ACC Cotterill added police had increased their presence again on Victory Road and a mobile police station would return to the area.

He also confirmed forensic examination of the scene was ongoing and the police cordon was unlikely to be lifted in the near future.

Large numbers of floral tributes left outside the house have now been removed by officers and placed in a nearby church.

The family attracted attention in 2006 when Mr Philpott asked the council for a larger house to accommodate his wife, girlfriend and 14 children.

In 2007, former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe spent a week living with the family as part of an ITV documentary and Mr Philpott also appeared on the Jeremy Kyle Show.

On 11 May, a 38-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of murder. They were both released without charge the following day.

The historic town and neighbouring Navan were once fortresses against Sinn Fein but in last year’s election the party won its first Dail seat in Meath in the Irish state’s history.

Peadar Toibin, the party’s Meath West TD, has been busy canvassing for a No vote in Thursday’s referendum on the fiscal treaty, which is designed to safeguard and stabilise the euro currency.

And although Fianna Fail is the main opposition party he says the real opposition to the Fine Gael and Labour coalition is coming from Sinn Fein.

“There isn’t a hair’s breadth between Fianna Fail, Labour and Fine Gael at the moment,” he says, “Fianna Fail are at sea; there are power struggles happening. Sinn Fein, in contrast, is a united cohesive party with a clear ideological vision of how they want to see Ireland and that’s resonating with the people of Ireland.”

In these difficult recessionary times Sinn Fein in the Republic sees itself as the voice of lower and middle income earners.

Its message seems to be chiming with voters – if polls are to be believed.

With Fianna Fail still being punished for its role in the banking crisis and the government raising taxes and cutting public expenditure Sinn Fein is on the rise.

But Labour’s Communications, Energy and Natural Resources minister, Pat Rabbitte accuses the party of cynical opportunism in manipulating disquiet about Ireland’s and Europe’s problems.

He says: “It’s an irony now that the performance of Ireland is constrained by the difficulties in Europe. A year ago Ireland was Europe’s problem; now Europe is Ireland’s problem. That means there are circumstances there to be exploited. Sinn Fein are doing that and ignoring the fact that they are doing exactly the opposite up the road in Newry.”

Cutbacks

Those comments strike a chord with John McCallister, the South Down MLA for the Ulster Unionist party.

He accuses Sinn Fein of rejecting austerity in the Republic while implementing similar measures and cutbacks, particularly in education, in the Northern Ireland executive.

“They supported the budget that implemented cutbacks all across the board. Then you look at the Republic, which is arguably in a much worse financial state than the United Kingdom. And there they’re opposed to austerity and urging a No vote to the treaty. It’s pure hypocrisy and should be highlighted at every opportunity,” he says.

Because of the Republic’s broadcasting referendum rules Sinn Fein, as the main party opposed to Thursday’s referendum, has been getting extensive publicity for its anti-austerity message.

The party’s deputy leader, Mary-Lou McDonald, who has been a frequent contributor to programmes, rejects that charge of hypocrisy saying Northern Ireland and the Republic’s political and economic arrangements are currently very different.

She said: “The realities in the two jurisdictions are like comparing apples and oranges. In the north there simply aren’t the tax-raising and fiscal powers that there are in the south. What you need to do is to ensure those powers are devolved to the Assembly and then you can have much more coherence north and south in terms of policy formation.”

The Republic’s next general election is due in 2016 – a big year in the republican calendar and for the Sinn Fein project.

If current polling trends continue – and it is a big if – the party could well be in government north and south of a border it opposes.

Then again if Greece and the Republic of Ireland are forced out of the Eurozone and the markets decide the new punt is a satellite currency of sterling many will then wonder what Easter 1916 and the last 100 years was all about?

And although Fianna Fail is the main opposition party he says the real opposition to the Fine Gael and Labour coalition is coming from Sinn Fein.

“There isn’t a hair’s breadth between Fianna Fail, Labour and Fine Gael at the moment,” he says, “Fianna Fail are at sea; there are power struggles happening. Sinn Fein, in contrast, is a united cohesive party with a clear ideological vision of how they want to see Ireland and that’s resonating with the people of Ireland.”

In these difficult recessionary times Sinn Fein in the Republic sees itself as the voice of lower and middle income earners.

Its message seems to be chiming with voters – if polls are to be believed.

With Fianna Fail still being punished for its role in the banking crisis and the government raising taxes and cutting public expenditure Sinn Fein is on the rise.

But Labour’s Communications, Energy and Natural Resources minister, Pat Rabbitte accuses the party of cynical opportunism in manipulating disquiet about Ireland’s and Europe’s problems.

He says: “It’s an irony now that the performance of Ireland is constrained by the difficulties in Europe. A year ago Ireland was Europe’s problem; now Europe is Ireland’s problem. That means there are circumstances there to be exploited. Sinn Fein are doing that and ignoring the fact that they are doing exactly the opposite up the road in Newry.”

Cutbacks

Those comments strike a chord with John McCallister, the South Down MLA for the Ulster Unionist party.

He accuses Sinn Fein of rejecting austerity in the Republic while implementing similar measures and cutbacks, particularly in education, in the Northern Ireland executive.

“They supported the budget that implemented cutbacks all across the board. Then you look at the Republic, which is arguably in a much worse financial state than the United Kingdom. And there they’re opposed to austerity and urging a No vote to the treaty. It’s pure hypocrisy and should be highlighted at every opportunity,” he says.

Because of the Republic’s broadcasting referendum rules Sinn Fein, as the main party opposed to Thursday’s referendum, has been getting extensive publicity for its anti-austerity message.

The party’s deputy leader, Mary-Lou McDonald, who has been a frequent contributor to programmes, rejects that charge of hypocrisy saying Northern Ireland and the Republic’s political and economic arrangements are currently very different.

She said: “The realities in the two jurisdictions are like comparing apples and oranges. In the north there simply aren’t the tax-raising and fiscal powers that there are in the south. What you need to do is to ensure those powers are devolved to the Assembly and then you can have much more coherence north and south in terms of policy formation.”

The Republic’s next general election is due in 2016 – a big year in the republican calendar and for the Sinn Fein project.

If current polling trends continue – and it is a big if – the party could well be in government north and south of a border it opposes.

Then again if Greece and the Republic of Ireland are forced out of the Eurozone and the markets decide the new punt is a satellite currency of sterling many will then wonder what Easter 1916 and the last 100 years was all about?

Imagine going to the internet to search your name only to find a mug shot from years ago posted on multiple websites. There are publications and websites whose sole purpose is to feature police booking photos. Some make a profit selling advertising around the photos, while other websites are offering, for a price, to remove or hide these images permanently. Donald Andrew McMahon learned about the mug shot business the hard way.

In 2003, McMahon woke up one morning covered in blood, with stab wounds and evicted from his home. McMahon was fired from his job and slept in a gas station bathroom that night. McMahon knew his life was in need of a change. At the time, the then-bartender was dealing with the deaths of his best friend and sister within months of each other, along with a family history of drug abuse.

McMahon started using cocaine at age 12 and lived in a drug-induced haze until he was 23. During those tumultuous years, McMahon was arrested several times, including two instances for driving under the influence of alcohol.

These days, McMahon is a happily married, churchgoing father who works at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. His wife, Andrea McMahon, is a part-time student at the University of Georgia earning a master’s in social work. When they’re not working, life for the McMahons revolves around their 2-year-old daughter, Gemma. It is a much different existence than McMahon once had.

“I’ll be outside watching them and a bag of bricks hits me,” McMahon said at his Norcross, Georgia, home while watching “Dora” with the family. “This is me now compared to eight years ago when I was living in a bar.”

On paper, McMahon is the quintessential American family man, but his past haunts him in publications and on websites that are using it for profit.

Mug Shots Inc.

As part of his recovery, McMahon went to the Internet to check his online image after he read that employers use Google to search the names of potential employees. Having served the time for his crimes, McMahon was shocked to find his mug shot still posted on a website along with others. He contacted the site to have the image removed. He paid a another site to have the mug shot removed only to see his photo show up in four other places.

“It’s like killing one flea and then saying, ‘OK the flea problem is done,’” McMahon said.

His frustration built when he contacted the website Reputation.com, which said for $7,500 it could not get rid of his image, but could “bury” it in Internet purgatory.

McMahon is not alone in finding his murky past displayed for the public.

Caught Up is a Tennessee-based weekly that dubs itself a “crime-fighting publication.” It features police booking photos. Found primarily in smaller communities throughout Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, and Kentucky, the publication showcases people’s names and alleged crimes listed below their mug shots.

Caught Up and other similar papers collect mug shots, which are public record, from sheriffs and local police departments, who hand over the information with the names listed in alphabetical order, detailing the criminal charges. These photos are also featured and archived on the publication’s website caughtuplive.com. Caught Up will feature anyone. One issue included OutKast’s Big Boi on the cover after he was arrested on a cruise in late 2011.

“Sometimes I say I’m the most popular woman of the small counties because police departments are so grateful,” said Lori Broderick, the media liaison for Caught Up. Broderick is involved in the publication of every paper, which puts out more than 25,000 copies weekly.

Broderick, who is also a paralegal, joined the Caught Up team in December 2010. She feels the mission of the paper is to give people the ability to keep an eye on their communities.

She recalls one woman who wanted some extra help with her lawn over the summer. The woman saw a picture of a man listed as a sex offender in Caught Up. It was the same man she was planning to hire to work at the home she shares with two teenage daughters. Broderick said the woman told her it was the best $1 she had ever spent.

The flip side is how the publication affects the people showcased. Broderick recalled a man who was a sex offender and had finished serving his sentence. The man was trying to rejoin the community but felt he couldn’t with his mug shot in the paper and online. Broderick said she and her team discussed the issue, but ultimately felt their need to inform was more important than helping the man overcome his past.

“When you’re talking about the safety of the community and the safety of children and seeing as how these are already public records, we just made the determination that it was in the best interest of the public to have this information available,” Broderick said. “The lack of knowledge was not a chance that we were ready to take.”

Mug shots: Informative vs. slander?

Caught Up consists mostly of mug shots with a few related written pieces and various games that it calls “informative fun.” There also is some local advertising.

Caught Up Vice President Geoffrey Bar-Lev said in today’s economy the profit margin for this business is relatively low. However, the demand for the publication in smaller communities has remained the same.

The business makes money even if the lives of the people who make up its content have changed, which leaves someone like McMahon out of luck.

Several clients have asked Kavan Singh-Grover, an Atlanta-based criminal defense attorney, about removing their mug shots from the sites and about what legal action can be taken.

“They are using a person’s image for commercial gain without their permission,” said Singh-Grover. “To me, its extortion, maybe not legally, but the common use of that term.”

Singh-Grover said legally, there is nothing that can be done. The only thing that could stop the publications and websites is legislation that forbids them. That legislation does not exist.

Caught Up’s Broderick said she understands the concerns and said other publications might have a lower standard, but their purpose is to encourage safety in communities, not promote public humiliation.

“People think we are in the business to mock,” Broderick said. “They believe that we have photos of a person who has been arrested to allow the community to thumb their nose at and that’s not our purpose. If people find some of the mug shots amusing, that’s more or less a side effect.”

McMahon isn’t laughing.

“But that’s the main way they make profit, right,” he said. “We can read a paper without looking at a picture and know that seven people were arrested for DUI — we don’t need the picture. It just — to me — seems like the way that they’re making money is because the pictures are pathetic or sometimes funny.”

RemoveSlander.com is a website that erases mug shots from the Web once a person has been legally cleared. The site said it uses “trade tools” to eliminate the mug shot. Spokesperson Philip Lee said he does not feel RemoveSlander.com should be “affiliated with the mug shot website.”

RemoveSlander.com via ImageMax Mugshot Removal said it is the first reputation management firm to offer the service. For $399, RemoveSlander.com allows a customer to specify one website from which to have a mug shot deleted. For $699.00, the mug shot is removed from three sites. Remove.Slander.com has 14 business days to remove the mug shot from the website and Google or the customer gets their money back. If a customer has multiple arrests with more than one booking photo, that costs more.

In his suburban Atlanta home, McMahon seems at peace with his new life and everything that comes with it. However, he’s eager to talk about his past if it means more people are aware of publications like Caught Up and sites like RemoveSlander.com.

“I’m human, I made a couple of mistakes — it’s not a secret I made more than one,” McMahon said. “Everyone has a past. It’s just unfortunate that mine is exploited for profit.”

Mitt Romney will meet with Sheldon Adelson – a man who, for many months, helped keep Newt Gingrich’s campaign afloat – at a stop in Las Vegas Tuesday, a campaign aide confirmed.

They will convene at Adelson’s office at the Venetian Hotel, where the executive offices of the Las Vegas Sands are located, according to a source with knowledge of the meeting.

The billionaire casino magnate, who serves as chairman of the board and CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, originally backed Gingrich and poured millions into a super PAC supporting the former House speaker’s campaign.

But when Gingrich dropped out of the race, Adelson signaled he would support Romney, the likely GOP nominee.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is very likely to be the clear first-place finisher in tonight’s GOP Senate primary in Texas.

But if Dewhurst fails to get 50 percent of the vote and the race goes to a runoff, it’s a (mostly) new ballgame.

In Texas, the race to replace retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) is all about the GOP primary, after Democrats’ prized recruit — former general Ricardo Sanchez — crashed and burned early in the race.

The GOP contest so far has been a bit of a jumbled mess, and Dewhurst’s top tea party competition, former state solicitor general Ted Cruz, has been badly outspent in a crowded field that includes former Dallas mayor Tom Leppert.

Still, Cruz appears to be the top threat to gain a two-man runoff with Dewhurst, and even if he finishes far behind Dewhurst today, it’s hard to count him out in the July 31 runoff.

Here’s why:

1. Time

If there is a runoff, it will occur July 31 — a full nine weeks after today’s primary. Runoffs, which are held in many Southern states, are generally four- or six-week sprints after a primary in which the candidates have already spent down their resources and then have to ramp up in a hurry for a quick race.

That compressed calendar generally favors the candidate who finished first in the initial race. But adding another month can galvanize much more support for the second-place finisher. And it gives Cruz much more time to close what is a sizeable early gap (more on that later).

Also keep in mind: Cruz benefitted when the primary was pushed from March to May thanks to the ongoing uncertainty over the state’s redistricting maps. It gave him more time to build up name identification against the well-known and very well-funded Dewhurst.

2. Money

Cruz has raised and spent about one-quarter of what Dewhurst has and he’s also been outspent by Leppert. (Both men were able to self-fund millions for their bids.) And without the race crystallizing into a Dewhurst-vs.-Cruz battle, the tea party organization hasn’t completely mobilized behind Cruz’s candidacy. (After all, why waste resources without knowing there will be a runoff with your candidate in it?)

If the race goes to a nine-week runoff, that tea party organization should be able to help Cruz be much more competitive — if (and that’s still an “if”) groups like the Club for Growth want to spend big money in what is a very expensive state.

Keep in mind, though, that Dewhurst has millions of personal money at his disposal and he will be outspend Cruz and any aligned groups. The gap just might not be as big the second time around.

3. Low turnout

With the presidential primary and many competitive congressional primaries on the ballot today, turnout is expected to be relatively high (for a primary). If it goes to a runoff in the middle of the summer, it’s hard to see it being a high turnout affair.

Generally in Texas, turnout drops by more than half for a runoff. That means the race comes down to more motivated voters; and more motivated voters tend to be more conservative, which could favor a tea party candidate like Cruz.

Polling at this point shows Dewhurst starts a runoff as a clear favorite; a survey this weekend from Democratic-leaning automated pollster Public Policy Polling showed Dewhurst starting with a 59 percent to 34 percent lead in a head-to-head matchup with Cruz — largely thanks to Leppert voters going overwhelmingly for Dewhurst.

It’s clear that Dewhurst would be a formidable candidate even if he can’t win the nomination outright tonight. But given the particulars of the runoff, it’s hard to say that the race wouldn’t wind up being competitive if Cruz can marshal the kind of resources that have been available to tea party favorites in the past.

Tensions were high in Ukraine on Friday as opposition lawmakers blocked a session of Parliament and the speaker called for new elections after a violent bout on the floor of the legislature that some observers have dubbed the “rumble in the Rada.”

Video of the fighting — which left at least one opposition politician bloodied and saw another flipped over a banister, his feet flailing in the air — quickly captured the attention of the international press, joining other ignominious images of lawmaking by other means. The Lede has cataloged past clips of such episodes.

Nor was it the first time that the Ukrainian chamber was transformed into a wood-paneled wrestling ring. In December 2010, pro-government and opposition lawmakers squared off in a huge brawl over criminal charges against the opposition leader and former prime minister, Yulia V. Tymoshenko, that left five people injured.

Ms. Tymoshenko, convicted on charges of abuse of office in a case that has been condemned by the West as politically driven, is currently serving a seven-year prison term.

The Parliament’s speaker, Volodymyr Lytvyn, said on Friday that in light of the previous day’s violence, he would favor a voluntary dissolution of the body and new elections.

“Because, to put it mildly, there is no need in observing all this mess any longer, and it is necessary to stop tormenting the country,” he told the Ukrainian News Agency. He presented his proposal to the country’s various political factions, the report said.

But as my colleague Andrew Roth reported, most legislators did not support the proposal. New elections are already scheduled for the fall.

The fight erupted as members of the Rada debated a law that would make Russian an equal and second language in about half the regions of Ukraine, including the capital, Kiev. The debate pitted the lawmakers from the country’s east — where President Viktor Yanukovich is popular and Russian is predominant — against those whose base of support is in the west where most speak Ukrainian.

Ambrose Dudley, a retired chief of bureau for The Associated Press, died Saturday after a long battle with cancer. He was 72.

Dudley started at AP in Raleigh in 1963 after two years as news editor of The State Journal of Frankfort in Kentucky.

During his 33-year career at AP, he covered legislatures in North Carolina, Kentucky and Rhode Island, served as broadcast supervisor in North Carolina and South Carolina, and worked as a correspondent in Rhode Island.

He was named news editor in Hartford, Conn., in 1971, and a year later, was named chief of bureau in Hartford. He became bureau chief for North Carolina in 1980, and retired in 1999.

Dudley hired several current staffers in the North Carolina bureau. The people who worked for him said he was especially supportive of helping women rise through the ranks of the wire service.

“Ambrose was an incredibly decent man with a very open spirit that infused his curiosity as a journalist and his style as a manager and AP bureau chief. He found room in his big heart for the many colleagues and professional friends who will miss him dearly,” said Kathleen Carroll, AP’s executive editor.

Dudley loved covering elections and hurricanes, said Sue Price Johnson, who knew him for more than 30 years and took over as bureau chief when Dudley stepped aside.

“His favorite part was getting to talk to the members and find out what was going on in the industry,” Johnson said.

Johnson was one of many staffers who Dudley helped push into bigger roles in the company. She retired as bureau chief for North Carolina and South Carolina in 2009.

“He was unfailingly optimistic throughout all of his illnesses,” Johnson said. “He was such a positive guy.”
